Glycomet is part of a class of medications known as biguanides. It helps reduce elevated blood glucose (hyperglycemia) by enhancing the body's utilization of insulin produced by the pancreas.
Metformin is an antihyperglycemic drug that enhances glucose tolerance in patients with type 2 diabetes, effectively lowering both fasting and post-meal plasma glucose levels. Its mechanisms of action differ from those of other oral antihyperglycemic medications. Metformin works by reducing glucose production in the liver, decreasing glucose absorption in the intestines, and boosting insulin sensitivity through increased peripheral glucose uptake and usage.
In contrast to sulfonylureas, Glycomet does not induce hypoglycemia in individuals with type 2 diabetes or in healthy subjects, nor does it lead to hyperinsulinemia. With Glycomet treatment, insulin secretion does not change, while fasting insulin levels and the overall plasma insulin response throughout the day may actually be reduced.
Glycomet is utilized to manage blood glucose levels in individuals with diabetes mellitus. It can be prescribed for: type 1 diabetes, also referred to as insulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile onset diabetes, when insulin on its own fails to regulate blood glucose adequately; and type 2 diabetes, commonly known as non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or maturity onset diabetes. It is particularly beneficial for those who are overweight, when diet and exercise alone do not sufficiently decrease high blood glucose levels (hyperglycemia).
Glycomet can be administered alone or alongside other medications for diabetes management. Its use in children is not generally advised, except for those with insulin-resistant diabetes who are hospitalized for treatment.
